THE PRINCIPLE—
Retrain Your Brain
Betty’s Inspiration: If you want things to be different, you have to think and act differently.
LEARN ONE NEW THING EACH DAY. Want to know how to say, “thank you” in Italian? Find out! Wondering what that purple flower is in the garden? Look it up! Curious about curry? Pick some up and start cooking! Learning one new thing a day will keep your brain challenged and flexible.
START YOUR DAY WITH AN AFFIRMATION. We’ve already discussed the power of positive affirmations. And since we believe you can never have too many, here are a few more for you. “I am capable.” “I am strong.” “I am brave.” “I am not afraid.” By doing this, you signal your brain to automatically think in a new and productive way.
TAKE A DIFFERENT ROUTE. Stop taking the same route every day. Go three blocks down instead of one. Turn right at the corner instead of left. Travel through a new neighborhood on your way to work. Take the “scenic route” instead of the short cut. Keep it interesting.
CHANGE UP YOUR PHYSICAL ROUTINE. Do you exercise in the morning? Try doing it at night. If you run errands after lunch, do them before instead. Switch up your pattern of working in the yard, taking out the trash, or walking your dog.
DO YOUR MORNING TASKS DIFFERENTLY. If you normally shower first and enjoy coffee after, have your coffee first and then shower. If you return calls and texts before you dress, try getting dressed first and then return your correspondence.
